THE HISTORY of Nomos

It was founded in January 1990, two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, by Roland Schwertner. The designs for the first collection were drawn up by Susanne Günther, drawing influence from the Bauhaus purist style. NOMOS designs are known for their clean and modernist aesthetic. The α (Alpha) wound NOMOS Orion became a classic the very first day it hit the market. We’ve covered it in-depth in A Week On The Wrist before, and we’re covering it again during what seems to be a season of makeovers for a couple of NOMOS families (recall the recent True Blue dial of the NOMOS Weltzeit just last month). Here, with the unveiling of the Orion 1989, NOMOS is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Making a splash: So robust and beautiful at the same time—that’s a rarity in the world of fine mechanical wristwatches. The back, held firm by six screws, the screw-down crown, and crown guard all ensure that everything stays watertight—to 20 atm, so 200 meters. The Tangente is one of the Nomos' most emblematic pieces; it stands for the sophistication and high-quality craftsmanship that the company has become renowned for in its relatively young history. Nomos is Germany's youngest luxury watch brand, establishing its roots in 1990 in the town of Glashütte. This watch is sophisticated, precise, and has contemporary flair, not only winning over design prize juries. Metro’s aesthetic is reminiscent of an intricate measuring tool. And shows how the days go by in the most modern way. Ludwig translates classicism into today. Roman numerals, indexes, a particularly slender bezel, and lugs that are equally so—whether automatic or hand-wound, this model demonstrates what is so hard to find these days: poise.
